Why not us? Why not now? :)

Magic Numbers:

at least 6th seed: clinched
at least 5th seed: 3
at least 4th seed: 4
at least 3rd seed: 3
at least 2nd seed: 5

1st seed: 5

I'll try to keep this updated as the season comes to a nail-biting close.

Denver's collapse last night brings us one game closer to at the very least, the 8th seed.

What are we at now? 3 or 2?

3 to secure 7/8.

9 for #1.

Geaux Hornets!

So we clinch w/a win tomorrow night?

yep, win over the Knicks means the Hornets clinch at least the 8th seed.

some worst-case scenarios though:

1) Any Golden State loss for the rest of the season
2) Any Denver loss (except GSW) for the rest of the season
3) Any three Dallas losses for the rest of the season

I was very surprised/impressed with Dallas last night. I wonder if the whole "Dirk injury/emotional return/salvaged season/"We've got nothing to lose!" scenario isn't the greatest thing that could have possibly happened to the Mavs?

I doubt they could take us, the Lakers, or Spurs in a 7 game series, but I'd now rather play Denver and Golden State (in that order) than the Mavericks.

I've been meaning to mention this before after seeing your name, but it gives me a chuckle for a couple of reasons:

I grew up on the North Side of Chicago, Rogers Park to be exact. One of the main things in Rogers Park is Loyola University's lakefront campus. So I grew up just a couple blocks away, spent much of my youth around the campus.

Further, up until my 7th grade year, I attended the grammar school St. Ignatius. It too, was just a couple of blocks away from where I grew up. Unfortunately, political BS resulted in it closing before my 8th grade year.

I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan these days...but the whole "Iggy Loyola" thing has a lot of meaning to me.

Cool deal.

If/When the Hornets make the NBA Finals, I'm going to put my old Jamal Mashburn Swingman jersey our Iggy statue at Loyola New Orleans. It's kind of a tradition to dress him up in costumes that relate to current events. He had Saints jerseys on a good bit in 2006.

Hrm, 7 for #1?

I guess that means that they'll hold the tiebreaker for whoever else would be there after 7 wins.

*bump*

6th seed officially clinched.

5 is the number. :D

How does this work?

at least 5th seed: 3
at least 4th seed: 4
at least 3rd seed: 3

Hornets would clinch the #3 seed by winning the SW, I'm guessing it has to do with that. These "magic numbers" usually confuse me as well, but I know that division-winners are guaranteed a top 4 seed and thats where the confusion is caused.

Hornet-Saint
April 7th, 2008, 02:46 PM
Division winners are guaranteed a top 4 seed, not a top 3 seed. That's why Utah has been stuck on 4 all year.

macatak911
April 7th, 2008, 02:50 PM
Yeah but you figure if we win 3 more games we clinch at least the #3 seed. So why would the 4 seed's magic number be 4. If we get the #3 seed theres no possible way we can be 4th. Hence the term "clinching the 3 seed."

Follow?

Oh, I do, but sites across the internet that I've been following for the purpose of updating these numbers have it as such.

Hmmmm.

edit: maybe it has to do with the games remaining against UTA/LAL?

Yeah you might be right. If we lose to Utah they have the tiebreakers so that's probably why.

The two numbers that REALLY matter:

3: clinches homecourt advantage
5: clinches #1 seed
