A buddy of mine was walking back to his office after the Hornets game and called me about the New Orleans Centre. He said that there are signs up saying that the complex is to be renamed the Springfield Centre. It is apparently going to be an upscale development with 60 high end shops. The one he mentioned specifically was Lacoste. He also said that some stores should open while it's being developed.

I can't find anything about this anywhere. Anybody know anything? I may take a walk down that way during lunch & see what's up.

It's been a long ass time since I've been in that building. Whenever I see it I immediately think of being there with my dad a couple of hours before the '91 playoff game vs Atlanta, standing at the bottom of the escalators booing the f*** out of a couple of Falcons fans coming down (along with the hundreds of other Saints fans getting ready to go to the game). I was like 8. Good times.

It'd be great to see even something will(might) be done with that eyesore let alone having it turned into an upscale shopping center.

That's interesting. I noticed it going to the game last week, but i dismissed it as being a front for a movie set. I've seen things changed temporarily for shoots. But, I hope the thing about retail is true.

Here's a fun fact: Before Katrina Judah Hertz was a major investor on the west coast, but not anymore. The Hertz Group has gotten rid of all of its west coast properties. They no longer have control over the New Orleans Shopping Centre. I don't know when the hell that changed, but it did. They still own the tower.

I walked down the street between the DOme and the NO Center and saw they had Springfield Centre Mall plastered on the windows and a banner type thing advetising 60 stores coming soon.

I have not heard anything about this as of yet but if it comes to a reality that would be a huge boost for that part of downtown. Its about time that we have seen something done there, its sat empty for far too long. Maybe those shops will open around the same time as the hotel reopening which I think is set for sometime this year.

An ESPN Zone over there is so long overdue it's disgusting.

Yeah, that would be $$$$$. The problem is that it isn't a franchise and "they" (ESPN) would have to open that up. I think it would do very well in that area.

I'm going with it's for a movie set

a) it is NOT open during constuction
b) other than Lacoste nothing has shown up for those companies on google.

I think Mac is right, I just haven't seen enough work going on in there in my trips to the city to believe that it's being re-developed.

You must be crazy! We clearly don't have the population or economy to support a sports-themed operation.

Apparently I got some bad info. If this Hebrew would ever register over here, we could properly chastise him.

Sorry but that mall is going to have to be torn down. The problem is that nothing will be done with that real estate unless it's announced that the Saints will either agree to completely revamp the Superdome and stay in that locale long-term, or that the new stadium will be built on the Superdome's footprint.

Otherwise, once the Saints move that shopping center will be virtually worthless. An ESPN Zone would be a great idea, but again - ESPN isn't likely to invest $10 to $15 million into a locale there if the Saints are only going to be playing in the Superdome for 8 more years.

YF is correct. That end of Poydras is completely dependent upon whatever happens with the Dome. Why else would you invest in that godforsaken part of town? I wish something would happen with that P.O.S property, though. . . even if it's just greenspace.
